La fallida implantación de la Orden Juandediana en Vitoria en el siglo XVI

Abstract

[ES] Documentamos Hermanos de Juan de Dios en Vitoria entre 1592 y 1608 en dos periodos separados por la epidemia de peste de fin del XVI. Su llegada coincide con la reducción hospitalaria promovida por Felipe II y Pío V, aunque no logramos documentar una causalidad. En su actividad sustituyen tanto al matrimonio hospitalero como al administrador, pretendiendo llegar a un control total del hospital supliendo también al capellán, aunque no lo logran, así como autofinanciarse a base de limosnas, aspecto económico que encandila al ayuntamiento vitoriano. Su marcha definitiva de Vitoria acontece tras la desaparición de su líder en un viaje a Roma.

[EN] Brothers of Saint John of God are documented in Vitoria between 1592 and 1608 into two separated periods because of plague at the end of the sixteenth century. Their arrival coincided in time with hospital reduction promoted by Felipe II and Pius V. In their activity they replaced the hospital couple as well as the administrator trying to get total control of the hospital, they also tried to replace the priest but they did not succeed, as well as the way they supported themselves asking for charity, economical aspect that dazzled the Town Hall of Vitoria. Their definitive departure from Vitoria happened after the disappearance of their leader on a trip to Rome.
