| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | [EN] Introduction: Zika virus (ZV) is a flavivirus transmited by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes that spreads rapidly throughout the Americas. Its possible association with microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare in February 2016 the expansion of this virus as a public health emergency of international level. Currently, there is no vaccine against ZV so it is necessary to maximize preventive measures, especially in pregnant women due to the recent increase in cases of microcephaly in fetuses/ or newborns occurred mainly during the outbreak that took place in Brazil. Objective: To analyse if there is an association between Zika virus infection in pregnant women and the appearance of microcephaly in fetuses and/or newborn. Methodology: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, CUIDEN, Ovid and Clinical Key. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied selecting a total of 12 articles. Results: Most studies show that there is an association between ZV infection in pregnant women and the appearance of microcephaly, the risk being higher if the infection occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy, which is when the fetal brain begins to develop and to form nerve cells. Conclusions: The association between VZ and the presence of microcephaly in fetuses and/or infants of infected mothers was confirmed, the risk being greater if maternal infection occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy. | es_ES |
