Los populares y la violencia política, treinta años después

Abstract

[ES] El punto de partida de este artículo es un artículo publicado hace treinta años en el Homenaje al Profesor Luis Michelena, editado por el Profesor José Luis Melena. En el texto se retoma la tesis de aquel artículo, centrado en la relación entre los populares y la violencia política, y se analiza la evolución historiográfica sobre el tema en estas tres décadas. Esta evolución está marcada por la influencia de la historia social, una nueva interpretación del conflicto político tardorrepublicano y una lectura crítica del testimonio ciceroniano. De resultas de esta evolución la violencia se analiza como resultado de un contexto socioeconómico crecientemente desigual y de una estrategia política por parte de los optimates totalmente opuesta a las propuestas reformistas de los populares. La hipótesis apuntada en aquel artículo de 1985 mantiene así plenamente su vigencia.

[EN] The starting point of this paper is another paper written thirty years ago in the volume published in honour of Professor Luis Michelena, and edited by Professor José Luis Melena. In this text the main ideas from the earlier paper, about the populares and political violence, are remembered, and we analyse the historiographical trends of the last three decades on the topic. This evolution is shaped by the growing influence of social history, by a new interpretation of political conflicts in the Late Roman Republic and by a critical reading of Cicero’s works. Violence is now considered a consequence of a deeply unequal socioeconomic context and a strategy implemented by the senatorial oligarchy, absolutely confronted to the reforms promoted by the populares. Therefore, the hypothesis advanced in that paper from 1985 remains still active.
