Learning the scientific model of sound (ScMS) is present in the science curriculum of all educational levels and is a critical component of scientific literacy. This paper presents a systematic review of students' understanding the ScMS around three key ideas that emerge from the epistemological analysis: nature of sound and its properties, propagation of sound and the wave model. It should be noted that, regardless of the educational stage, there is a difficulty in relating the intrinsic properties of sound to wave magnitudes and a persistence of conceptions that attribute material properties to sound. In addition, there is no clear learning progression of the ScMS from Primary Education to the early years of University. Finally, the implications for teaching and learning the ScMS are discussed.
