In this paper, we set out to examine the controversy held between Elio Vittorini, director of the Il Politecnico journal, and some prominent members of the cultural apparatus of the Italian Communist Party. We take such controversy as an occasion to reflect upon the terms in which the debate between politics and culture took place in postwar Italian Marxism, and the specific role of intellectuals in the strategy of political hegemony that the PCI intended to develop.; A través del examen de la polémica entre Elio Vittorini, director de Il Politecnico, y algunos miembros prominentes del aparato cultural del Partido Comunista Italiano, se exponen aquí los términos en los que se substanció el debate entre política y cultura en el entorno del marxismo italiano de posguerra, y el papel concreto de los intelectuales en la estrategia de hegemonía que el PCI pretendía desarrollar.
