Tras la cumbre de Hong Kong

Abstract

Unlike the previous ministerial conferences by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle, Doha and Cancun, the 2005 one in Hong Kong was not sucked into the chaos of street riots; it did not hasten negotiation deadlines through lastminute decisions made when the delegates were about to leave; it did not finish either with everyone blaming each other for the failure of the meeting. However, that is all about the success of the conference. The agreement reached in Hong Kong is but a missed chance to make trade available also to those stricken by poverty all over the world. This article offers a preliminary analysis of the results provided by the Hong Kong conference and studies its implications for the Doha meeting, the WTO and world development.; A diferencia de las pasadas conferencias ministeriales de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC) en Seattle, Doha y Cancún, la de Hong Kong 2005 no se hundió en medio de un caos de disturbios callejeros; no forzó las fechas límites de negociación con conclusiones de última hora tomadas cuando los delegados tenían un pie en el avión; y tampoco acabó en un cruce de acusaciones culpándose unos a otros del fracaso de la reunión.
