El objeto de este trabajo se centra en la síntesis y caracterización de nuevos materiales cristalinos con huecos potencialmente accesibles a las moléculas de adsorbato. Esta meta se ha alcanzado mediante el uso de compuestos de coordinación basados en metales de transición y biomoléculas con capacidad para autoensamblarse. Teniendo en cuenta la importancia que el área de los esqueletos metal orgánicos (Metal-Organic Frameworks, MOFs) han adquirido en los últimos años, así como la relevancia y variedad de sus posibles aplicaciones, se decidió diseñar y sintetizar materiales porosos análogos pero basados en un concepto diferente. En este sentido, se ha dado un paso adelante en la estrategia de diseño de MOFs basados en enlaces de coordinación metal-ligando extendidos, explorando un nuevo tipo de materiales compuestos por entidades metal-nucleobase discretas que se unen a través de enlaces de hidrógeno complementarios. Éste es una nueva área de investigación, muy reciente y en el que los ejemplos de este tipo de compuestos son muy escasos.
