This paper is a result of a two-year ethnographic investigation among the Pentecostal Roma of the Espronceda neighborhood in Sabadell. Coinciding with the construction of the Espronceda popular housing estate at the beginning of the 60s of the last century, in the southern part of the municipality, a new religious trend derived from Pentecosalism from France, is expanding among the Roma population with unprecedented success. It will end up adopting the name of the Church of Philadelphia and, from then on, to the present day it will transform, not only the forms of organization of this population, perpetually persecuted, but also the personal and collective sense of life. This will take place by shaping what I have conceptualized as a Fervent Habitus. This new habitus adopted by the most active members of the congregation, will be the product of the intense and emotional services that, through daily, effervescent, sensual, and participative celebrations and loaded with messages on how to guide themselves in life, will alter the bodies and progressively modifying their most controversial practices. This transformation will affect both the individual and group self-image of the gypsy, as well as the vital conception of him and his expectations of improvement of status and of reaching intellectual work positions beyond artistic or mercantile idiosyncratic activities.
