Un gran problema dentro de las ciudades, más cuando estas son grandes es el desplazamiento de los ciudadanos. Las carreteras e intersecciones dentro de los núcleos urbanos no permiten que todos los ciudadanos se desplacen de una manera fluida, por eso los ayuntamientos intentan impulsar los transportes urbanos. Estos transportes pueden ser desde autobuses para agrupar a un número más amplio de personas en un único vehículo hasta servicios como metro o tranvía donde se reserva una vía a un solo vehículo.
Las ciudades gestionan los diferentes flujos de automóviles en las intersecciones de una manera estática. Esto implica que los tiempos que se asignan a los semáforos sean constantes y no se adapten a las condiciones variables del tráfico en cada momento, por lo que el rendimiento no es el óptimo. Dado que en una ciudad hay gran número de intersecciones reguladas por estos sistemas, la ineficiencia de éstos da lugar a cientos horas perdidas por los ciudadanos.
T-lights es un sistema que analizando una situación del tráfico concreto toma la decisión que lo solvente de la manera más rápida, obteniendo con ello gran número de ventajas. Los ciudadanos verían sus transportes dentro de las ciudades mucho más fluidos, reduciendo el tiempo que tardan en llegar a sus destinos. Los peatones cumplirían las normas viales ya que el semáforo siempre indicará cuando sea el momento más seguro para pasar, reduciéndose de esta forma gran número de accidentes.
