[EN] The beginning of the HIV pandemic in the 1990s and the high number of deaths due to
its evolution to AIDS generated great social alarm worldwide. This is a research work on
the epidemiological evolution of HIV in Spain based on the analysis of databases such as
UNAIDS and MISAN. The data obtained in response to the hypotheses put forward show
an exponential decline in the number of HIV/AIDS cases from 1990 to the present.
Spaniards of Latin American origin together with the MSM risk group account for the
highest incidence rate in Spain. The Community of Madrid has the highest number of
HIV diagnoses in its history and is the Autonomous Community most affected by the
COVID-19 pandemic, during which it recorded the greatest decrease in the number of
HIV diagnoses at the national level. This progressive decrease in the number of
HIV/AIDS cases is due to the epidemiological control of the disease due to the appearance
of antiretroviral therapy, the improvement of diagnostic methods and the implementation
of strategic plans that provide comprehensive care by governments and institutions.
