Teodulfo de Orléans y las Artes Liberales

Abstract

[ES] Nuestro propósito en este artículo es analizar un poema medieval titulado « De septem artibus liberalibus in quadam pictura depictis», cuyo autor, Teodulfo de Orléans, fue, además de eclesiástico, político y escritor, el poeta más célebre de la corte carolingia. El poema en cuestión contiene una descripción alegórica de la Sabiduría y las siete Artes Liberales, motivo recurrente en el arte iconográfico medieval a partir de la influencia ejercida por escritores como Prudencio, Marciano Capella o Boecio. El objetivo último del trabajo es profundizar en la interpretación simbólica de las imágenes utilizadas a lo largo del poema, establecer las fuentes literarias que han podido influir en el mismo y definir la postura del autor en relación al papel desempeñado por las Artes profanas en la adquisición de la "vera sapientia".

[EN] The aim of this paper is to comment a medieval poem called «De septem artibus liberalibus in quadam pictura depictis», whose author, Theodulf of Orléans, was a bishop, politician, writer and, above all, the most eminent poet in carolingian Court. The poem’s subject is an alegorical description of Wisdom and the Seven Liberal Arts, a recurrent motiv in the medieval iconographic art, due to the influence of writers as Prudentius, Capella or Boethius. Our purpose in this work is to go deep into the symbolic interpretation of the images used, to set up the literary sources which have probably influenced the poem and to explain the author’s opinion in relation to the role the Liberal Arts played in order to acquire the true wisdom or "vera sapientia".
