[EN] Air pollution, and the exposure to the environmental pollutant PM2.5 in particular, is a major risk factor in terms of health in the European Union. However, it does not affect all individuals equally, but the risk is exacerbated in lower income countries and urban areas. This paper introduces the legal framework for air quality and analyses the impact of exposure to the pollutant PM2.5 on both health and the economy in the European Union. A linear regression model to analyse the effect of exposure to PM2.5 particles, controlled by demographic and economic variables, on the mortality rate in metropolitan regions located within the European Union is also suggested. The results obtained indicate that exposure to this pollutant impacts on the mortality rate of the metropolitan regions in a non-linear way, so that, as the level of exposure of the inhabitants of the metropolitan regions to this pollutant increases, the marginal increase in premature mortality diminishes. [EU] Airearen kutsadura eta, bereziki, PM2.5 ingurumen-kutsatzailearekiko esposizioa arrisku faktore garrantzitsua da Europar Batasunean. Hala ere, ez die pertsona guztiei modu berean eragiten, egoera larriagotu egiten baita errenta baxuko herrialdeetan eta hiriguneetan. Lan honek Europar Batasunaren testuinguruan ingurumen-kalitatea arautzen duen esparru arautzailea aurkezten du, eta PM2.5 kutsatzailearekiko esposizioak osasunean eta ekonomian duten eragina aztertzen du. Halaber, erregresio lineal ekologiko eredu bat proposatzen du. Honekin, aldagai demografiko eta ekonomikoekin batera PM2.5 partikulen esposizioak Europar Batasunean kokatzen diren metropoli-eskualdeetako heriotza-tasan duen eragina aztertzen da. Lortutako emaitzek adierazten dutenez, metropoli-eskualdeetan PM2.5 kutsatzailearekiko esposizioak heriotza-tasan modu ez lineal batean eragiten du. Beraz, metropoli-eskualdeetan kutsatzaile honekiko biztanleek duten esposizio-maila handitzen doan heinean, hilkortasun goiztiarraren hazkunde marjinala murrizten da.
