Servicio militar y emigración. Reflexiones, posibilidades y problemas desde el caso español

Abstract

[ES]El servicio militar se halla entre las razones tradicionales para explicar la existencia de las migraciones españolas a Ultramar (siglos XIX-XX), tanto por los analistas contemporáneos como por la posterior historiografía. Partiendo de un estado de la cuestión de la literatura más reciente, combinado con estudio de fuentes primarias, planteamos que si bien existe una clara vinculación entre las cifras de profuguismo militar y las regiones con mayores índices migratorios, resulta muy discutible plantear una relación causa/efecto entre ambos. No obstante, el reclutamiento militar, por esta misma correlación, constituye una fuente de gran relevancia para un estudio secuenciado y microlocal de la emigración.

[EN]Military service is one of the main reasons used both by contemporary witnesses and present-day historiography to explain mass migrations from Spain overseas in the 19th-20th centuries. In this article it is made a state of the art on the topic with the latest literature, as well as with a study on several primary sources. Even though there is a clear correlation between the figures of desertion and geographical distribution of emigration, it is still difficult to establish a direct causal link between them. Nonetheless, military recruitment is a very valuable source for studying overseas migration from a microlocal perspective.
