dc.description.abstract[EN] This contribution, the result of research done in the framework of TRACE (Translation & Censorship) projects, focuses on a case study: Mart Crowley’s 1968 play The boys in the band, which premiered in Madrid on the stage of Teatro Barceló in 1975 and was soon labelled “the first public manifestation of Spanish gay power”. The translation by Jaime Azpilicueta and Ignacio Artime was authorized by Francoist censorship and was available to the public in a stage production as well as published version just before Franco’s death (November 20th 1975). The play had been planned in 1970 as a production by Andrés de Kramer, based on a translation by Jaime Salom, that was immediately banned. The second attempt to have the censors’ approval in 1972, met with a more favourable reaction (there was a draw in the votes issued by censors for and against) and was banned again. Homosexuality, a highly sensitive topic for censors, was not a new topic on Spanish stages, it had been shyly introduced in 1956, with the production of Anderson’s Tea and Sympathy, later on in 1959 with the premiere of Shaffer’s Five finger exercise and in 1963 with the staging of Albee’s Zoo Story. This contribution aims at presenting a thorough analysis of documents pertaining the censorship process of The boys in the band / Los chicos de la banda. Thus, the information contained in censorship records, particularly censors’ reports, is presented in detail along with a close comparative appraisal of source and target texts. Among other documents the “Antecrítica” or Introduction to the first translation of The Boys in the Band submitted to censorship, signed by the translator Jaime Salom, which remained forgotten in the archives is reproduced with permission by the translator.
